These are great tips to consider. As you mentioned, a lot of people starting to work from home fail to fully assess how they are going to function in this type of “work environment.” I work full-time in an office but work on freelance projects and my side business at home. I struggle to be completely productive working at home and sometimes go out of my way to find an alternative space (coffee shops, book stores, etc.) to get things on my to-do list checked off. My favorite tips are 3, 6, and especially 9. I am always more productive (and save time later) when I get dressed for my work day, even if I’m staying at home.

Great post John. I was happy to see the “get dressed” tip on the list. I think that one is very important and often overlooked. If I was going to add another tip to your list, it would be, “Identify what you are really good at and work hard to improve weaknesses”. Most home-base workers/business owners are transitioning from a job where their specialty was clearly defined into one where they must wear many hats. Failure to recognize weaknesses and make decisions that mitigate them is a central cause of failure and struggle for small business owners and managers.
