Adding friends to your Facebook seems like a easy step in the process but I will tell you this: Many markets mess it up! So how do marketers mess up something so simple as adding friends? Well I will tell you, its called the shotgun  strategy.  So how do you avoid this shotgun strategy and go after your target market?

Step One: Who Is Your Target Market? That’s the million dollar question. Lets say you were selling video games. You only want to add friends who play and buy those video games. Think of your target market.

Step Two: Find your target market. You ask how do I do that. Its very easy if your target market is video games, you go to groups and search for stuff related to video games.  Once you find these groups of people you now have your target market in front of you.

Step Three: Build your following.  Its time to start adding friends and having fun. Here are a few things to keep in mind when building your following.

  • Only add 50 Friends a day. (If you go too fast FaceBook will tell you to slow down)
  • Don’t use a program to add friends. (Facebook will kick you out)
  • Add a personal message when adding friends.  (Draft a message, one that sounds professional, and keep it handy)
  • Approve all requests for friendship from others.
  • Join Groups in your target market.(people will invite you from these groups)
  • Join the conversation. (Get out in the conversation and be seen)
  • Write on your friends Walls.
  • Link your FaceBook to other websites. Your Blog, Twitter, Myspace and You tube.

Use this strategy and your following will start to climb. You won’t have 1000 followers overnight. Facebook doesn’t work that way but if you stay consistent and do it everyday, you will be very surprised at how well it works.

I hope you enjoyed the information and would love to hear you thoughts on the subject of “Build Your Following”.

Setting up your profile is very important. You want to have a page that draws people into your profile and eventually have them clicking on your links.  You want to come across as a professional and a person that they might want to meet in real life. This can be  very tricky to pull off, but it all starts with the picture.

Your Picture is what they see first. It’s the first impression you make on them, and my mom always told me to make a good first impression.  So make sure you have a good picture of you. Now I see some people with a picture of their business logo.   You have to ask yourself if you see a picture of a business logo right off the bat, what would you think? I know what I’m going to think, what is this person trying to sell me. Not a very good first impression.  On the other hand you might not want  a picture of you taking a beer bong from your college days.  Use common since and ask yourself when looking at your picture, would I want to work with this person?

After your Picture, the next thing on your profile page people see is the box below your picture. This box gives you a chance to write a little about yourself and put a link in it. This is what mine looks like.
