What Role Does The Entrepreneur Play In Today’s U.S Economy

by John Marshall on August 27, 2010

Becoming an entrepreneur is the new American Dream. Start a business, work hard, make it successful, and make enough money to enjoy life. This might explain why entrepreneurs launch more than 6 million businesses in the United States each year. Many of these business owners are leaving secure jobs to realize their dream.

Over the last several decades the number of businesses being launched by entrepreneurs having continued to grow.  Many factors play into this growth and many people say it’s because being an entrepreneur has become mainstream. Entrepreneurship is now cool and exciting to Generation Y and is seen not as a risky career path. After watching their parents getting laid off by large companies, this generation nows sees entrepreneurship as an ideal way to create the new American Dream.

Others have been forced into entrepreneurship over the last few decades. Productivity gains in recent decades have made it possible for large companies to downsize. Many of these employees who received a pink slip have been forced in to entrepreneurship. With a competitive job market and a lack of large companies hiring new personal. This has only left long time corporate workers with one option.

Entrepreneurship courses are also offered by thousands of colleges and universities. The internet has thousands of resources for entrepreneurs to start a business. These resources available in today’s world just allows almost anyone the chance to start a company.

The factors mentioned above have helped entrepreneurship grow but this last factor could be the one with the most impact on entrepreneurship. The shift in the U.S economy over the last few decades now favors small businesses. The United States has moved away from an industrial economy to a knowledge-based one.  The U.S economy is now fueled by the services industry which allows for great opportunities without huge capital to start-up.

We are now moving into the world of the entrepreneur in the United States. We no longer can rely on large companies and government to take care of us. Mr. Marshall, thanks for a great article on the new American Dream, starting a business. The fact that Americans start businesses at the rate of 500,000 a month (or 6million a year as you mention in your post) is absolutely mind boggling to me.

I appreciate the insight that you share about the things that motivate us to start businesses. I also appreciate that you point out that whether it is a group of baby of baby boomers or of Gen Y, you will find aspiring entrepreneurs among them. We may not be motivated for the same reasons, but we share the same goal.

Thanks for your perspective about how entrepreneurship will be increasingly important in our changing economy.
